6th Grade Unit Study: The Islamic World

Students in Ms. Mann, Mrs. Walker, and Mrs. Tiffner’s classes have just concluded a unit study on the Islamic world as part of their Social Studies curriculum. Throughout this unit, the students explored the complexities of Islam, gaining a deeper understanding of its religious principles and cultural significance. They also examined the remarkable achievements and contributions of key figures within Islamic society, appreciating their impact on fields such as science, literature, and philosophy. To bring their studies to life, the students analyzed the intricate art and stunning architecture characteristic of the Islamic world. The unit concluded with a hands-on activity where students channeled their creativity to design and create their own stained glass artwork, inspired by the beautiful geometric patterns and vibrant colors found in Islamic art. This immersive experience not only enhanced their knowledge but also allowed them to appreciate the artistic heritage of the Islamic civilization.

Meet Mrs. Melissa Monaco, one of Pierrepont School’s administrative assistants and the glue that holds our school together. A team player who devotes herself to her profession, Mrs. Monaco is always available to assist students, staff, and families from the moment she enters the building.

Mrs. Monaco is the ultimate multi-tasker and can always be counted on to get the job done efficiently and effectively. Whether it is a warm greeting in the morning, assistance to ensure the building is adequately staffed, or response to morning phone calls and typical daily requests, Mrs. Monaco does it all with a smile.

Mrs. Monaco has exhibited a great deal of care, ideal work ethics, motivation, dedication and overall professionalism, all which make her so deserving of this recognition.

We appreciate Mrs. Monaco for all she does. She truly is an example of Pierrepont Pride.

Social Emotional Resources

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health concerns for children. Some degree of anxiety in children is appropriate rather than alarming. However, when a child’s functioning becomes impaired, it is important to find appropriate interventions to help alleviate feelings of nervousness and worry.

Pierrepont School Wins Recycling Challenge

Pierrepont School was named the winner of the Northeast Elementary division of the Trex Plastic Film Recycling Challenge. We competed against 723 other schools and were able to recycle 2,246 pounds of plastic! Thank you to all members of the Rutherford community who participated in the challenge. A special thank you to Mr. Bach, Mrs. Singer, and the Pierrepont Green Team for coordinating the project.

Pierrepont School Plastic Bag Drive

The Green Team at Pierrepont School would like to thank the entire Rutherford community for helping make their plastic bag collection a huge success! With an initial goal of 500 pounds, we were able to collect 2,248 pounds of plastic bags! This event was a huge success. The Green Team worked hard on a daily basis to collect, bag, weigh, and store these plastic bags.

Pierrepont Green Team

The Green Team at Pierrepont School has been working extremely hard bagging, weighing, and recycling plastic bags. To date, we have been able to recycle just over 2,000 pounds of bags! That is just about 200,000 ShopRite bags! Our last drop off will be April 3. Thank you to all who have contributed to this effort.

Diversity Wreath

Pierrepont School’s fifth graders were asked to assist the Civil Rights Commission in creating the first student-produced holiday wreath for the commission’s contribution to the Kip Center’s Festival of Trees.

The theme of “Diversity” was used as a discussion point in class lessons during the Week of Respect . Students researched the traditional costumes of their cultural heritage and decorated popsicle people. Fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Margit Smith and art teacher, Ms. Stephanie Natiello collaborated to combine over 200 popsicle people into this beautiful wreath.
