This is an exciting time in your kindergartener’s life.  They have been learning how to be a part of a learning community socially and academically and have developed a solid foundation of literacy and numeracy to build upon. This exciting time of year in our “kindergarten world” is referred to as Kindergarten Part 2.  We encourage students to be more independent with their daily responsibilities such as following routines, independently using self-help skills, and applying themselves more independently.

It has been amazing to see the growth in so many of our kindergarten students.  Readers and writers are emerging as letter knowledge expands into building words and sentences. Students are developing an understanding of the world around them through daily experiences and making mathematical connections to the real world by naming and recognizing shapes, counting  and comparing using appropriate  mathematical vocabulary.
Daily experiences are providing student opportunities to develop life skills such as communication, turn-taking, and collaboration. Students are also growing as individuals learning appropriate behaviors and  how to follow routines without prompting.
We are proud of where students are and excited for their continued growth!

Whether your child will be starting kindergarten in the fall or your child will be moving on to grade 1, summer break is always an exciting time of growth and development through their innate curiosities. As parents/guardians, embrace the different experiences to further develop your child’s growth socially, emotionally. and academically.
Go for a walk through in our community!
Observe the changes in environment before and after a summer storm.
Attend a concert in the park.
Make a new friend.
Visit a museum.
Did you know that the Rutherford Public Library has free passes to visit various museums?  They also provide a full calendar of events, summer reading contests, and a welcoming environment to cool off and read a book during the hot summer days. A daily calendar of easy to do activities is also available for students on our district website.
Have a safe, healthy summer and be on the lookout for information from your teacher in late August!

In a world filled with so many “things”, it is often difficult for children to appreciate all they do have such as a place to live, food, clean water, friends, and family.
At the Kindergarten Center, we promote an Attitude of Gratitude all year long, appreciating moments of successes no matter how big or small.  Gratitude is taking a moment to reflect on how lucky you are when something good happens.
To help promote an Attitude of Gratitude at home consider writing a thank you note or creating artwork for someone you or your family is grateful for, or take a moment to share a positive moment in your day that made you happy.  Donating time, food, or clothing are also great ways to have children acknowledge how lucky they are and that they can play a part in helping those around them.  To help support those in need, the Kindergarten Center collected food for the Rutherford Food Pantry and are collecting mittens and hats during the month of December!

We are Kindergarten… and in Kindergarten we are learning so much based on those 3 simple principles.
We are SAFE.
We learn about making safe choices throughout our day not only for the individual but ensuring the choices one makes are safe for others.
We are KIND.
We learn to be kind to ourselves if we make a mistake and we learn about the importance of being kind to others.
We are BRAVE.
We learn to be brave to try new things and to try them again even if it isn’t easy the first time or the second time.
We look forward to all that is ahead at the Kindergarten Center throughout the year.

Summer provides unique opportunities for students to continue their development.  Whether it be at home, camp, the park, a campground or beach, provide your child with opportunities to play.  Playing promotes creativity, develops fine and gross motor skills, and encourages turn taking and conflict resolution.
Summer also allows a child time to apply the skills and concepts they have learned in preschool or kindergarten to their own, natural environment. Encourage students to count the shells they found, find letters along the trails or read signs posted within the community!  These realistic connections between personal experiences and learning help facilitate a long last love for learning!
We also encourage taking time to read with your child or in front of your child.  Children often mimic what they see and what better way than providing them the opportunity to develop a love for reading. We have also created a calendar of daily activities to do with your child throughout the summer as they approach the first day of kindergarten.  This is optional and is not required but rather is an organized means to help your child get ready for school.
